Located in Grant County, New Mexico, Silver City is the county seat. Western New Mexico University is located here. The city’s population was 10,315 as of the 2010 census. As of the 2020 census, the city’s population was expected to decrease to 9,704.

The town’s vibrant arts scene is evident in the many galleries and cafes in downtown. Many renowned festivals take place in the area, including the annual Silver City Clay Festival. Several cafes in town feature local artwork and colorful buildings. The Silver City Museum is a great place to explore the history of this small city. It also features a large collection of local artwork, including a mural of the famous Silver City Fire Department.

Although small in size, Silver City is a treasure of southwest New Mexico. Its eclectic culture is a welcome break from the hectic lifestyle of big cities. You’ll find outdoor recreation and arts and entertainment in this town, and you’ll enjoy the local cuisine. It is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a unique shopping experience. There are dozens of festivals and events held in the town throughout the year.

The town was settled by Mimbres Mogollon Indians during the late 18th century. Many of their archaeological sites are in Silver City, and several others in nearby communities. The town’s first independent school district and early electric service were established here. The town survived the Apache Wars and the floods that plagued the region during the early twentieth century. Once the silver mining industry began to decline, Silver City shifted into a health resort and educational center.

There are hundreds of hiking trails in and around Silver City. Several of these include the City of Rocks State Park, a geological monolith in the desert floor. Another notable trail is the Catwalk National Recreation Trail that clings to the walls of Whitewater Canyon. You can also spend a day bird watching in Silver City’s riparian area. These sites are highly regarded by other travelers. If you’re not a hiker, you should consider a campsite in Silver City, New Mexico.

A flash flood in 1895 destroyed Silver City’s Main Street, and the town’s inhabitants were inspired to turn the ditch into a park. Today, you can find picnic tables, benches, and mature shade trees in Big Ditch Park. The town’s visitors center provides information about the event and the community’s history. A nearby whitewater creek offers a short drive from Silver City. You can also take a scenic drive to the historic cliff dwellings and see the remains of John Bullard, a local pioneer.

The Inn in Silver City offers a good deal at a reasonable price. The hotel is conveniently located near the Historic District and WNMU. It is pet friendly and offers easy access to local attractions and activities. While staying in Silver City, be sure to enjoy a buffet breakfast. You’ll also appreciate the hot breakfast included with every stay. Ample parking and free Wi-Fi are also important considerations for selecting a hotel.
