15 Hiking Trails in Skaneateles Lake NY

July 1, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Skaneateles Lake NY

Skaneateles Lake is one of the Finger lakes in central New York. In the local Iroquoian language, Skaneateles means “long lake,” and it is also known as the “Roof Garden of the Lakes” due to its higher altitude. Its quaint, charming towns are located around the lake and offer many opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Read on to learn more about this idyllic lake.

Skaneateles Lake is home to many fish species. Boating is a popular pastime here, and the Skaneateles Town Boat Launch and Mandana Boat Launch are two locations that provide access to the water. Skaneateles Marina also offers canoe and kayak rentals, and there are even postal boat and dinner cruises on Lake Ontario. Some companies also offer tours of the Erie Canal.

The lake trout population in Skaneateles Lake NY is stable. Lake trout catch in standard gang surveys reveals a light-to-medium density population. However, the cisco population has decreased precipitously since the 1989 survey, when it was at its maximum. It is unknown if the VHSV outbreak affected the fish population or if the population simply stopped growing. However, the lake trout population is stable and the fish population is not thriving.

Skaneateles Lake Cottage – Overlooking the beautiful waters of Skaneateles Lake, this cozy cottage is a perfect getaway for a small family or couples retreat. The cottage includes a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, and king-sized sleeping loft. Sleeping six people comfortably, the cottage also features a 30′ boat dock and two kayaks for guests to use. If you plan on catching some fish or swimming in the lake, this property is a perfect getaway.

Skaneateles Lake is a Finger-Lake, which means “long lake” in the local Iroquoian language. It is also referred to as the Roof Garden of the Lakes because of its higher altitude. The lake is also an important source of drinking water for local communities. And the weed growth in Skaneateles Lake is limited compared to that of other Finger lakes.

When you visit Skaneateles, don’t miss Doug’s Fish Fry. Its atmosphere is reminiscent of the small New England towns Norman Rockwell would have liked to visit. You can also browse the art galleries, antique stores, and specialty shops. Restaurants include Sherwood Inn, Rosalie’s Cucina, and Johnny Angel’s Heavenly Burgers. And don’t forget to visit the local organic farm and restaurant, Elderberry Pond.
