A small town in the southwest corner of the state, Durango is known for its historical attractions. Visit the historic Silverton & Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad, which crisscrosses the city and passes through the canyons and mountains. The museum houses restored locomotives and aircraft, as well as a converted baggage car turned movie theater. The Powerhouse Science Center features interactive exhibits and displays in a former power plant.

If you want to enjoy a more laid-back experience, consider a day trip to Vallecito Lake, 20 miles northeast of the city. Surrounded by mountains, this lake offers a scenic setting for a day of family fun. Another fun place to visit is the Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum, which offers tours through the town’s underground mines. You can also visit the Strater Hotel, which dates back to 1887, and see gorgeous woodwork, stained glass, and masonry. The Strater Hotel is the oldest hotel in Durango, and it features indoor plumbing.
