Eatonton is the county seat of Putnam County, Georgia. The population of the city is approximately 6,307 people. The city was named after William Eaton, a British officer and diplomat who served in the First Barbary War. The name is derived from his surname plus the English suffix “ton” – meaning “town”. However, there is no official history of the town. The city is home to a diverse mix of businesses, including a historic district.

The Eatonton area is home to several interesting historical sites and museums. The Artisans Village Art Gallery was opened in 2014.
