Exeter is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The population was 16,049 at the 2010 census and 14,306 at the 2020 census. Until 1997, it served as the county seat, but the offices were moved to neighboring Brentwood. The town is located about six miles south of the state capital in Manchester. There are several local businesses that cater to tourists in the area, but you can find a lot of restaurants and shopping in Exeter.

The town has a quaint downtown and historic architecture. The mills were built by the Milliken Company and the library was constructed on their land. The library is located in Founders Park, a park created to commemorate the 350th anniversary of Exeter. The public library is open to the public and offers many programs. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the facilities are clean and welcoming. It has a wide range of books and programs.

The town’s glory days were from 1774 to 1788. There were many national and international events held in Exeter, including the first written state constitution and declaration of independence from Great Britain. Until 1782, the state government met in the old townhouse. It moved to Concord after the town was declared the state capital. While the state legislature was in session, the Committee of Safety met in Exeter. Even after the government moved to Concord, the committee of safety still met in the town.
