Before the arrival of white people, Winthrop was home to Indians. Many Indians used Winthrop as a winter and summer retreat. Because the Indians were relatively newcomers to the area, they had no written language or any archeological material. They were primitive people and had very few written documents. The early settlers of the town had no record of their lifestyles. While Winthrop is under the shadow of Boston, there were only a few Indians when serious problems came.
The town was primarily a farming area until 1852, when the State House grew too large. Originally, Winthrop consisted of only two small towns, Chelsea and Revere.
