In the late 1800s, this small town was home to a huge gold vein that yielded nuggets so large they could sustain a person for a year. In 1872, a small mining community, Trinidad, was saved by George Simpson, who also happened to be an archeologist. To learn more about Trinidad’s rich heritage, consider taking a trip down the Highway of Legends. This road is open all year round and takes you along the Cucharas River.

The town was founded in 1862 and was first explored by Spanish traders. The town was later settled by Mexican traders who appreciated the city’s proximity to the Santa Fe Trail. Coal was discovered in this area and Trinidad grew rapidly. By the late 1860s, the town had a population of approximately 1,200 people. The town was incorporated in 1876. In 1878, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway reached Trinidad. This made shipping easier.

It is also close to the town’s historical significance, as the city was home to the semi-pro baseball team of Damon Runyon.
