The first mail to reach the city from the east came through Trinidad during the early days of the Civil War. During that time, there were guerrillas operating in the area and later, the Colorado Volunteers marched past Trinidad, destroying Confederate hopes in the Battle of Glorieta Pass. In 1862, a farmer named Felipe Baca traveled through the area to sell flour. He became a prosperous farmer in New Mexico before relocating to Trinidad and claiming the bottomland that would eventually become the heart of the city.
