Gratz Park Historic District is a large area in downtown Lexington that includes a city park and several large residences. According to Kentucky architectural historian Clay Lancaster, Gratz Park is a garden oasis in the cityscape. The park was originally established in 1781 and purchased by Transylvania Seminary in 1893. The church’s congregation increased to over 400 people. The first African Baptist Church is located in a beautiful part of town near downtown.
